What to pack
For a mountain walk*
Walking boots or shoes with good grip that you've worn in - we all hate blisters!
Waterproof jacket and trousers
Warm layers - it's a good idea to bring one more than you think you'll need
Warm hat and gloves
Lunch and snacks - remember you'll be burning more calories than a normal day so treat yourself!
Enough water to see you through a full day - most people need at least 1 litre
Personal medication
Walking poles are also really useful for most people (and their knees)
On a hot day:
A layer that covers your shoulders
Sun hat
Sun cream
Extra water - and rehydration tablets or sachets are also very handy
Some of this might seem over the top on a warm day, but the temperature is always far cooler up high, and our body temperatures drop significantly if we need to stop for longer than planned (especially in case of incident or injury.)
Pics: A day of two halves on a recent trip up Scafell Pike!
Extras for a navigation session:
A compass you will use on your own days out - the Silva Expedition 4 is good. Shop around for a good deal
Any maps you already have. But I will also bring maps of the area to use on the day.
Your phone, with any mapping software you use to aid navigation
Good places to check the weather
Still wondering how many layers or litres of water to bring?
You can check out the Lake District Forecast on the Mountain Weather Information Service
Or take a look at the Met Office Lake District forecast. This is great because it gives forecasts for specific areas - including many Lake District Summits - and gives a 'feels like' temperature, wind speed, and visibility on the tops. Try putting the name of a nearby mountain into the search bar on the Met Office app or website.
